The quote below was in this last Sunday’s sermon. The series of 4 is only halfway done and already very impactful. Last week’s sermon with an illustration of our life as a mist (referring to James 4:14) really hit home the point that our time here on earth is very brief….. and what are we doing about it that will have eternal impact. What I took away from it was the only actions and decisions in my life that eternally matter aren’t my career, my house, my money, my clothes — they are my choice to accept Jesus as my Savior and my actions that point others to Jesus. Everything else is temporary to this world.

The quote I found particularly profound was:

“If you have accepted Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior then your time on earth is the closest you will ever be to hell.

If you have not accepted Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior then your time on earth is the closest you’ll ever be to heaven.”

Back when I got my first job, my boss had a good quote that actually came to the front of my memory this morning.

“Weekends are like ice cream. There are some flavors that are better than others, but there is no bad ice cream.”

That wise quote continues to be true many decades later.

The quote below was from my morning email devotional by Max Lucado.

“Worship is a voluntary act of gratitude offered by the saved to the Savior, by the healed to the Healer, and by the delivered to the Deliverer.”

I hope that this Thanksgiving weekend you can find time in your schedule and room in your heart to worship Jesus.

“All the days of the oppressed are wretched,
but the cheerful heart has a continual feast.” — Proverbs 15:15

“Wondrous is the strength of cheerfulness, and its power of endurance – the cheerful man will do more in the same time, will do it better, will preserve it longer, than the sad or sullen” — Thomas Carlyle

I am visiting family on San Juan Island and was able to spend the day with my folks, sister, bro-in-law and two nieces. We hit the local farmer’s market, grilled sausages for lunch, went on a hike to Young Hill (967 ft above sea level), picked blackberries for a dessert pie, watched deer 25 ft away eat apples from their trees, and thoroughly enjoyed a delicious dinner and dessert with great family company.

While on our hike, we spent time at the top soaking in the magnificent view. You could see Victoria, Canada, all the many islands in the area, container ships in the main shipping channel, and boats in the local bays. It was a gorgeous day with blue skies, puffy white clouds and miles of visibility. So when a tourist couple arrived at the top and began to take each other’s picture, I walked over and offered my Ansel Adams services to take their picture together. And this is where my niece made a quote that cracked me up.

Upon seeing my action, my sister said to my niece, “Isn’t Uncle Dan so nice”.

My niece, without hesitation, replied, “I bet you didn’t think that when you were little”.

She so nailed it!

I saw this on my friend’s Facebook page — in fact, the same friend who hosts this site. Her small business (the one Obama said she didn’t build) is there on the sidebar, American Discount Web Hosting. And boy am I glad I switched from sleazy Ho-Daddy to a small business that is built on values.

On KLOVE this morning, I heard a very cool statement by Mike Donehey from Tenth Ave North

“You can’t live FOR God until you start living BECAUSE of God”

My oldest daughter is interning for the summer at my favorite local Christian radio station. One of her first assignments was to photograph the WJIE Louisville Bats Day at the Ballpark and Concert. This is a super annual event where the radio station puts on a concert at the Bats baseball game (the Louisville Bats are our local AAA minor league farm team for the Cincinnati Reds) and all the attendees get to watch the baseball game afterwards. It is always an enjoyable event and this year’s act was Big Daddy Weave. We enjoyed their music last year at the annual WJIE Sweetheart Dinner (which I blogged about here).

During the concert, lead singer Mike Weaver said something very impactful that really hit me.

“The love of Jesus is bigger than any mess we make”

Amen!

Heard today:

God says “You can worry if you can prove that it works for you”.

I heard this on a Dave Ramsey podcast today driving home.

“The downside to liberty and freedom is that stupid isn’t illegal.”

The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and discipline. – Proverbs 1:7
