Archive for the ‘Spiritual’ Category

The list below was shared by a pastoral Facebook friend who is a true fisher of men. I am sharing it as truth and very Biblical. And while I believe in equality between the sexes, I also know they aren’t the same (which modern feminism is bent on shoving upon us).

I use this simple equation to prove that. $1 = 4 quarters (one dollar equals four quarters but one dollar is not the same as four quarters). A one dollar bill is useless for a soda machine that only takes coins. And if you are purchasing a new flat screen TV with cash, coins are pretty useless. While the monetary amounts are equal, they are also not the same and are used for different purposes. That is how God made men and women.

  1. Men protect women and children.
  2. Men are leaders.
  3. Men are responsible as heads of their families.
  4. Men are to teach their children 24/7.
  5. Men are to love their wives as Christ loved the church and be willing to die for them.
  6. Men are to be fruitful and multiply.
  7. Men do not own their bodies. Their wives do.
  8. Men must bring up their children in the training and admonition of the Lord.
  9. Men must ensure that their whole families and everyone else around them should celebrate the Sabbath.
  10. Men’s hearts should be turned toward their children.

This week my local radio station, WJIE, is having their Spring fundraiser that raises most of the operating costs for their ministry. I have been fortunate to join them several mornings this week before work to help answer phones and hear some good stories from those who listen. (This explains my lack of posts this week due to early to bed and wake up time at 4:45am.)

There was Maia who was 8 years old and donating $8 from her Christmas money. There was the couple who, during the Fall fundraiser, had pledged $25 a week only to have the husband lose his job that day. They remained faithful and met their pledge in spite of their challenge. He subsequently found an even better job and were calling up to double their pledge to $50 a week. And there was Luke, age 11, who gave $20 and asked that we pray for an upcoming doctor appointment he was worried about.

While I was volunteering and answering phones, I would always end the call by asking the caller if they had any prayer requests. Interestingly, there were no decliners (as there had been in previous years). Every single person had a need or asked that I pray for someone else. It truly mirrored my own prayer list which is very full of folks who are sick, hurting, suffering, hopeless, or just in need of our Savior’s love. I am amazed at how prayer works and have testified in blog posts on the power of prayer.

I encourage you to go pledge — WJIE (Where Jesus Is Exalted. WJIE is a faithful ministry that reaches out, spreads the love of Christ and gives hope and encouragement to those who are listening. And if you are outside of the Louisville listening area you can still stream WJIE online from their web site.

During my wife’s recent surgery and subsequent hospitalization due to complications (see posts here and here), our marriage grew based on a conversation that we had never had in all the years we were married.

In the evening and early morning before I rushed her to the ER, she had held back something from me. She had been thinking that each time she closed her eyes would be her last and that she would wake up in heaven. She wasn’t ready to die but she was at peace in her faith knowing where she was going and knowing that she and I would be reunited in Christ in heaven. Now that’s not to say that it wouldn’t suck for me and it would be terrible for the kids. If she were to have died it would have had a huge impact to our family. However, she and I are confident in the fact that God would get us through that valley and we would see each other again when we came home to Jesus.

Interestingly, I had also held something back from her. I saw her limp, crumpled, bloodied body on the floor of our master bedroom that early Valentine’s Day and, as I drove her to the ER, I did not know if I would be driving her home. She was in terrible shape. However, while I definitely did not want her to die, I was confident in her faith and my faith in Christ that we would be reunited at home in heaven. Her departure would resonate indefinitely in our family impacting each of us deeply. But God would get us through it and we were not without hope — we would see each other again based on our faith in Christ.

We did not reveal those experiences with each other until several days after she returned home. But the conversation and marriage growth that resulted was incredible. We had never talked about death or the loss of either one of us before. That tends to be a topic that most of us relegate to the back dark corner hoping that if we don’t think about it, it won’t happen. But the freedom and hope we both felt after that conversation was truly perspective changing. And while we cannot dismiss the impact to our children, we are both now in better places mentally, emotionally and spiritually. I can only hope that others have this same faith confidence in Christ with their cherished relationships.

The post below was on my wife’s Facebook status this morning.

Last week about this time I really thought if I closed my eyes I may not wake up. Two thoughts crossed my mind:
1) I wasn’t afraid; I was ready to meet Jesus
2) yet I wasn’t ready to die

You see I have this incredible hope and faith and I thought about the people out there suffering that didn’t have hope or faith and how that broke my heart. How they could be at a low point and have no hope? Having God in my life makes all the difference in everything I do and how I live. I, more than ever, want to bring my non-believer friends to the light. I believe this experience wasn’t about me at all. God was using me to bring people to Him. He wanted to hear from people and if it was praying for me then so be it. So for all those people who struggled to pray and find the words, you brought tears to God’s eyes and He wants to continue to hear from you. He cares immensely about your heart . There is hope and light and love and you have a Savior. God loves you so.

Pretty cool insight considering all she’s been through these last several weeks.

While doing my Bible In A Year reading today, I was impacted by some subnotes from the book of Judges that, in my mind, is a warning to our society today.

“In those days Israel had no king; everyone did as he saw fit.” — Judges 17:6

Anyone who has not submitted to God will end up doing whatever seems right at the time. This tendency is present in all of us. To know what is really right and to have the strength to do it, we need to draw closer to God and his Word.

So true.

I have blogged recently about the mild weather we have been having here in Kentucky. Last night it was quite windy and this morning I woke up to a warmish 58F morning but it was still very dark and windy outside. On my way in to work as I drove along my normal two lane country road route, I suddenly saw a very large tree that had blown down in the night — and it was blocking my lane. Luckily for me, it was not blocking the entire road, just my lane. And with no other vehicles coming from the other direction, I was able to slow down, safely cross over, navigate around the blockage, and continue on. However, with it still being early morning and pitch dark, I could not in good conscience leave that obstacle unmarked for another car to hit. God was nudging me and telling me that turning around and marking the hazard was the right thing to do.

So I found the next driveway and pulled in. I popped the trunk, got out of my car and looked to see what safety gear I had. Luckily, I had a couple of flares and gloves which I grabbed and put on the front seat. I turned around to go back, intent to mark the hazard for other drivers, at least until the sun came up.

As I came upon the familiar scene, a local sheriff had also come across the blocked lane and stopped his truck on the shoulder with his bright blue lights flashing. He was out simultaneously waving his flashlight at traffic and heaving his body against the downed tree and branches to try to make a safer pathway. I stopped with my rolled down window and asked if he needed help and if he wanted to use my flares. He politely declined saying that he was going to stay and mark the location until local road crews showed up.

With the situation safely in talented hands, I returned back to my normal work bound direction and finished my commute with no further anomalies. But my “call to inaction” got me thinking….. I was definitely called to turn around and make a dangerous situation better — only to have it already taken care of. And I can tell you that is not the only time that has happened. There have been many unblogged times where I have been called for my roadside ministry to turn around and help someone only to find out that they either already had help (or it was on the way) or were already gone with their problem solved by the time it took for me to find the next exit, turn around, and go back to help them.

On some of those times, I wondered why I was prompted by God to turn around when He knew that this situation was being taken care of. One answer that came to me was that He was testing my obedience. Just like in the Old Testament when He tested Abraham by asking Abraham to sacrifice his son Isaac. Abraham was obedient and began to go through the action but ended up not having to do so. It is similar — in action, but not depth — when I obediently turn to serve someone. And don’t get me wrong — my turning around to help a fellow motorist is not as deep or sacrificial as God’s call to Abraham to sacrifice his son Isaac. And also don’t get me wrong — I am probably just as disobedient by not turning around when I am called as to the number of times that I am obedient when I do serve someone else. This blog post is not meant to highlight my actions or inactions, but more to identify times where God tests us and our only need is to be obedient. Sometimes we don’t need to do anything more than that.

I encourage you to listen to God and be obedient in areas where you are called to service. Sometimes the only thing you need to do is say “yes” and answer His call. Even if you were intending to serve, God might already have it taken care of.

Please share and comment if you have experiences when God has “called you to inaction”.

I am so very blessed to be spiritually shepherded by Kyle Idleman, minister at Southeast Christian Church. In fact, it was his Scripturally based preaching along with authentic worship that hooked my family to grow beyond our lukewarm church (that whole process is a blog post all it’s own — some day).

Anyway, Kyle created the Not A Fan series to separate the wheat from the chaff; the follower from the fan. It is a message that cuts deep and cuts sharp. It is not for the feint of heart. But it is the truth.

For a short period of time, you can watch the Not A Fan movie for free here — http://www.notafan.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=83 . It is an incredibly impactful hour and 10 minutes. On my Facebook page, I shared it with the comment that it was a spiritual gut punch — one that I really needed.

I highly encourage you to take the time, challenge yourself and grow your relationship with the Christ that bought your salvation with his death.

Because our family was on the road yesterday, we recorded the Broncos-Steelers game. However, we also cheated and checked the score during the game via our iPhone app. And when my wife announced that the Broncos beat the Steelers in overtime we both yelled and high fived in the truck. I plan on watching that game tonight when I get home.

Below is a statement that was forwarded to me from a friend. I don’t know the validity of the details, but they sound very cool.

The fact that Tebow had 316 yards passing and averaged 31.6 yards per pass in the game didn’t escape notice on Sunday night. Tebow wore “John 3:16” on his eye black in the 2009 BCS Championship game and has since become identified with the famous Bible message. The coincidental stats caused millions of fans to perform Google searches on the Bible passage in the past 24 hours. Here’s one more unbelievable stat: John Ourand of Sports Business Journal reports that the final quarter-hour television rating for the Broncos-Steelers game was, you guessed it, 31.6.

And just in case, in the remote chance, that you don’t know the verse of John 3:16, here it is.

“For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.”

Bring on the Patriots!
